The name Wayanad is derived from Vayal Nadu which means the land of paddy fields. It is a picturesque plateau situated at a height of 2100- 6700 Ft above the sea level nestled among the mountains of the Western Ghats on the Eastern portion of North Kerala. Even though a Tribal dominated region, Wayanad contributes a big share to the foreign exchange earning of the state with its production of cash crops like pepper, cardamom, coffee, tea, spices and other condiments. The region is also a widely popular tourist destination with a range of attractions like scenic locations, wildlife, waterfalls, historic site, religious sites etc.

Tour Plan

8.00 AM - Pick up
We have to start early as we have to come some ground to arrive at the hill town. A 50 Kms ride from the city takes us to the base of the Ghat roads leading up to Wayanad. The 14 Kms stretch of winding roads with gurgling waterfalls, lush green forest canopy, monkeys on the roadside waiting for passersby to drop some easy pickings for them are a welcoming sight for the excitement filled day ahead of you.
9.30 AM
On top the ghat roads we pull over for bird’s eye view into the plains beneath. Your guide for the day will meet you here at the Chain Tree, which according to local myth holds the spirit of a Tribal chieftain who showed the way up to British engineer through the dense forest and was later murdered by him to credit of finding the route.
10.30 AM
Drive through aesthetically laid tea plantations to on winding roads to arrive at Suchippara waterfalls. Have some leisure time here, and proceed to the pre-historic cave complex at Edakkal. A short hike is required to reach the caves, for the adventure minded; we can climb further up the cliff for a panoramic view of the plains.
12.30 PM
Make a short visit to the Wayanad Heritage Museum, before we break for lunch at a local restaurant. Post lunch, we will make a visit to the Uravu, an organization that focuses on the production and marketing of local hand crafted artifacts and furniture made exclusively of bamboo.
03.30 PM
Arrive at the freshwater lake of Pookode for some relaxing time in the calmness of the surroundings. Listen to the bird’s calls and the flickering of leaves as the gentle breeze passes through them. You may either take a gentle stroll through the promenade surrounding the lake or embark on a boat ride to tickle your romantic side.
04.30 PM
We start our ride back to Calicut. Before departing, you may look for some local produce like home made chocolates, honey, bamboo crafts etc.
06.30 PM
Drop off at your hotel/ local address back at Kozhikode ending a wonderful day at the land of paddy fields.
